چکیده

Below is a discussion of an FDA-approved noninvasive Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) System for ambulation by traumatic T1 to T12 paraplegics having no sensation and no motor function below their spinal cord injury (SCI). The system’s ambulation training, its ambulation performance evaluation and its medical evaluation are summarized.

Thoracic Level Complete Paraplegia–Walking Performance, Training and Medical Benefits with the PARASTEP FES System

Goal: The paper discusses walking performance and the related patient-training of the non-invasive Parastep (also known as Parastep-1) Functional Electrical Stimulation System. Regulatory status: The Parastep system was approved in 1993 by the FDA (USA) for walking by complete and near-complete paraplegics with upper-motor-neuron T1 to T12 spinal cord injuries, having no motor function and no s...

RESPONSES OF OXYGEN CONSUMPTION, HEART RATE AND PERCEIVED EXERTION TO CRUTCH WALKING: A COMPARISON BE TWEEN PAR APLEGIC AND ABLE-BODIED SUBJECTS

In this study, 10 normal volunteers and 5 sports-trained paraplegics with lesions between T6 and L2 were studied whilst walking with axillary crutches and knee-anlde-foot orthoses. All subjects walked at their preferred speed on a figureof- eight track. Normal subjects also walked at slower and faster speeds. Oxygen consumption, heart rate and rating of perceived exertion were measured. In...

Rating of Perceived Exertion as an Indicator of Exercise Intensity in Paraplegics

Background: Energy expenditure is of paramount importance in the assessment of usefulness of wheelchair for paraplegics. Despite widespread recognition of problems associated with currently available mobility systems for persons with spinal cord injuries, development of more efficient systems has been slow.  Lack of a suitable and simple technique for the assessment of energy expenditure in par...

Development of an optimized pedal path by using Functional Electrical Stimulation

The aim of this study was to develop a special optimized pedal path to be used on an exercise-tricycle for paraplegics. Cycling as a means for training with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for paraplegics has been studied by various authors. Threeand four-wheeled cycles have been developed (Mayr, 1992; Petrofsky et al., 1983; Petrofsky & Smith, 1992). The stimulation patterns for the st...

Functional Electrical Stimulation on Paraplegic Patients. We report on clinical and physiological effects of 8 months Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) of quadriceps femoris muscle on 16 paraplegic patients. Each patient had muscle biopsies, CT-muscle diameter measurements, knee extension strength testing carried out before and after 8 months FES training. Skin perfusion was documented th...
